I stay in an apartment and the lights in the courtyard are run off a light switch in my apartment. The lights are not infr red activated so i want to change the light switch to a socket which the lights can then be activated by a timer, is that ok ?

light switches don't (usually) work like that.

However you can get timer light switches

show us a pic of the front of yours, and also the connections inside if you can isolate the supply and do it safely.

Thanks, i have seen the timer light switches but wasnt sure if there was anything out there that could do the job, currently is simply a 1 gang light switch

Before you dive in, are you renting? Is that courtyard for your exclusive use or is it a public space or is it shared by the other apartments in the block?
