Switching a security light between manual and sensing mode

I have fitted a few exterior motion sensing security lights. I have read the instructions that it is possible to switch between manual and sensing modes. They say that you have to switch the off and on quickly in order to switch it. That never works for me. What might I be doing wrong. Is switching off then on, different. To switching them on then off. What does quick mean.

If wired correctly then it should work.
What are the make and model number?

What might I be doing wrong.

Usually just a normal speed.
Sometimes off and on twice is stated.

Is switching off then on, different. To switching them on then off.

Yes. Switching on then off means it will be off.

What position is the switch when working in automatic mode?
Could your switch be 'upside down'?

Try this,

On mode ----Try switching on then off then on again immediately
Pir mode----Try switching on then off---wait half a minute then switch on

Basically u have the switch on as normal.

Then briefly turn it off and then on again within 2 seconds for example.

When you say that it never works for you, what exactly do you mean? Do you mean that it always stays in PIR sensing mode, or that it always stays in the 'manually on' mode?
