We are building a garage with a room over which will be used as a spare bedroom/kids playroom, ie not used constantly or heated all the time. We are wondering whether it's worth spending the extra money on T&G flooring or just fit 22mm chip - it will be carpeted so not an aesthetics thing, just a question of limiting creaking and maintenance... Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

The chip would probably be your best bet.
If you can, lay some insulation between the floor joists to keep off the cold air from the garage. Also, don't forget some underlay - it all helps keep residual heat in.
Is the central heating getting extended into there?

it will have central heating, but not necessarily on regularly... What about damp? And also, isn't chip more likely to creak or is it a case of how it's fixed??? Have read the forum entry on how to fix floorboards, but it seems there are mixed views on nails or screws... Thanks for your reply!!

chipboard is a terrible material. You can get flooring ply which is a little more expensive but does not crack and crumble and break and creak, and fall apart when it gets moist.

Agreed, chip is nasty, but another option would be osb flooring panels, it's t&g and is a nice performance/cost between chip and ply.
Come to think of it you could even use OSB roofdeck, nice 8x4 boards, with t&g on the joins, plus less noggins needed as it's 8x4. But get them up there before you plasterboard the ceiling beneath otherwise you'll never get em up the stairs!

Thanks for all the feedback... Had thought of OSB flooring, but not sure where to get it as most local builder's merchants don't seem to stock it... And what about building regs if we use the roof panels??? And is it SOOO much better than the chip??? Also, surely ply isn't T&G so could warp and be a pain in the ****?? No-one really suggesting that softwood T&G floorboards is the way forward - is that the case?

you can get T&G flooring ply.

nothing is as awful as chipboard.

i have a seen a donkey with gold teeth on weston beach. He also had dread locks and was smoking a massive splif.
