I bought a tap from an onliner retailer (yes, I know!!)

After a week of the installation the valve basically disintergrated.

He now says he won;'t replace it because I did it instead of a 'qualified' plumber.

A) Is there any legislation taht requires me to get a qualified plumber to installa tap.
B) What consitutes a qualified plumber ?
C) Is there anything that I could have done during install that could ahve caused the ceramic valve to fall too peices in situ.

I have repalced this tap with one from my friendly local plumbing merchant now.

Just wondering abtou the small claims court because his attitude p*ssed me off.

Which supplier was it and which model or part number?

Exactly how did it "disintergrate" ?

Was Called Luxury for Less.....

When I say disintergrate. My wife went to turn it on and the handle came off in her hand and water started spraying everywhere.

I undid the housing to see if there was anything I could do and ti came out into 20 pieces. I then shoved a rag hard into the hole until I could drain down the hot water.

if you`re in Sussex........I could for a small fee...............

Yes, you could have struck it several sharp blows with a hammer, if you'd wanted to.

i dont know anything about plumming but I do know about consumer law. There is not requirement to have the equipment fitted by a qualified plumer and the good fall under the umberella of the sale of goods.
basically you have contacted him once, and he refused. You should send him a letter (keep a copy) outlining your complaint. There is an example format of the HM courts website
http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/courtfinder/forms/ex301_0406.pdf
page 3
if he doesnt respond within 7 days, follow up with another letter (again keep a copy) if he doesnt respond with 7 days of that book a date in the small claims court (you can book them online these days) through
http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/HMCSCourtFinder/
also be sure to register on but dont pay the fees yet (the fee are refunded)
https://www.moneyclaim.gov.uk/csmco2/index.jsp
also the form to make the claim for submission in court is
http://www.hmcourts-service.gov.uk/courtfinder/forms/n1_0102.pdf
it may seem tought but it isnt and you are free to call any of the local courts and they will talk you through it or call citizens advice

As apj101 quite rightly says is the case.....unless the supplier has specific T&Cs on his web site that state that items must only be installed by a suitably qualified plumber he must offer a refund. Limited guarantees and warranties can also be a stumbling block but the "limited" bit must be reasonable both in quality and time. A supplier cannot say 30 days guarantee on something that is obviously designed to last a lot longer...like a tap.....unless the guarantee is purely for manufacturing defects and not longevity ...like an AA battery for example. Either way the OP is covered...the onus...if he was stupid enough to push it, is for the supplier to prove incompetence by the customer.

There is a general principle that a "competent" person can carry out all sorts of installation work under this sort of law, again, unless specified by the supplier. CORGI related stuff etc...is a typical exception of course.

Give them grief....

The tap probably doesn't have WRAS approval so it's illegal to install anyway :D http://www.wrcnsf.com/tap_shower.htm

Anyone know when the proposed changes to the water regs. come in ? ie it's illegal to sell non-approved taps/fittings etc (currently just illegal to install).

And what's the odds it will make any difference to the illegal carp on ebay and diy sheds.

Good spot guys...bet they are either Eastern European or far eastern copies/manfacturer....that many withdrawn ratings is very bad.

ebay would love to know
