Currently planning my new bathroom, i intend to build a stud wall enclosure around a shower tray and then tile it, my question is do i need to plaster the stud walls before i apply the tanking or can it be applied directly onto the untreated plasterboards, don't want to use aqua panel as it's too expensive, thanks

tanking onto plasterboard

No you don't need to skim the boards, you can use your tanking product directly onto the plasterboard. Check the manufacturer's instructions for whichever product you go for though. Here's Bal's information http://194.223.92.131/pdf/Technical...hnical Data Sheets/Bal_WP1_Tanking_System.pdf
