Hi guys, just about ready to start the t&j but what wondering what order the work should take?

I assume that first is the screw fixings and any holes or damage to boards? Then do I do the tapered joints? But what about the ceiling joints, butt joints and internal corner joints? What order should these be in?

Richard

Always do the ceilings first whether plastering, taping etc.
Tape all the joints in the ceiling, along the ceiling/wall line, fill screwheads etc. Then go onto the walls,,, alll joints in the boards, screwheads, internal corners,, then corner tape any external corners, ( window/door reveals) plus any external wall corner joints. I normally do all of the external window/door reveal corners last. Sometimes, you might even have to put corner tapes onto say a beam etc in the ceiling, or tape an archway too,, again, i normally do these last as well, so i'm doing all the metal corner taping in one go.

Hi Roughcaster, so ceiling first, but do I do the tapered joints first, then the butt joints and then the ceiling/wall joints. Walls to follow same sequence, tapered, butts and corners?

Richard

On the ceiling, I'd do the long tapered joints first, then the butt joints, then around the wall/ceiling joints, plus screwheads etc. On the walls, i'd do the tapered joints, internal corners, any other joints, screwheads, followed by externals, (corner tape).

On some of the corners and ceiling joints there are some gaps up to about 4mm in places. Should I apply some compound to these and let dry before applying the tapes?

Richard

You're always better filling the bigger gaps first, then tape as you said Richard.

Where butt and taper joints meet do you apply the butt tape before doing the final finishes on the taper joint?

Richard

There's a bit more work needed where a taper meets a butt joint. Bed the tape on as per normal, but make sure you keep the filler on the butt side of the joint tight. Run the trowel/scraper over that side of the joint a couple of times, to squeeze out any excess filler. Let it dry then put another coat over the whole joint. Feather the second coat over the tape, taking it, out much wider on the butt side to blend away any bump that might show. Hope you get my drift.

Yes, I get what you mean, but do you finish the tapered joint or at least after putting the 2nd coat before fitting the butt joint tape?

Richard

I get what you mean now too Richard. I suppose you could fill out the tapered edge side, let it set/dry out, then put on the tape over the joint, (tapered/butt), then go over it again as per normal. You'll need to feather away either side of the joint doing it way due to fact you're filling bevel flush first, then put on the tape. When i get a wall with a bevel/cut butt joint, i'll bed the tape on, then work on it filling out the bevel side, then when it's dry, feather away the butt side. Confusing trying to explain it ain't it.
