HMRC claws back nearly £500mn in underpaid capital gains

Last year the tax authority nearly doubled the amount it pulled in from CGT probes compared with 2024-25.

HM Revenue & Customs clawed back half a billion pounds in unpaid capital gains tax last year, nearly doubling its yield compared with the year before, as the UK tax authority stepped up investigations into payments of the levy.

The agency recovered £477mn in additional tax in 2025-26, up by 82 per cent from the previous year, according to data obtained under a Freedom of Information request by the FT. HMRC concluded 9,400 probes in the same year, up from 3,200 in 2021-22.

In recent years the UK authority has become more assertive in its pursuit of untaxed gains, advisers said, asking for more information from taxpayers and taking increasingly aggressive stances when reaching settlements. The increase in interventions since 2021-22 is also a result of HMRC recruiting more officers and redeploying compliance staff who were moved elsewhere to support Covid schemes during the pandemic, the UK tax authority said.

HMRC has come under pressure in recent years to increase tax receipts by improving taxpayer compliance. The agency is seeking in particular to improve compliance among wealthy people, with a compliance plan set to be published later this year."

"Wealthy people," eh? Who'd have thought it?

"HMRC revealed last month that it had drawn up a list of billionaires “with a UK tax footprint” and would assign each a dedicated customer compliance manager to act as their primary point of contact.

The gap between what wealthy taxpayers owed and what they paid was £3.6bn in 2024-25, according to HMRC’s provisional estimate."

I'm stunned, I tell you, stunned.

For the first time, HMRC reported CGT receipts from crypto investors, showing that £1.38bn was paid by 17,600 crypto holders, the bulk of them aged between 35 and 44. Gains of at least £1mn each on crypto assets were reported by 240 people, it said.

HMRC has been cracking down on crypto tax evasion and recovered more than £8mn from settlements with digital asset tax evaders, the FT reported last month."

The wealthy folk that the commies so hate pay most of the country's taxes. And some of them are leaving.

What sort of people populate this forum?

The statement is the exact opposite of the truth. Tax avoidance is generally legal, while tax evasion is illegal.

Must be a deformer.

Gotcha! So we have a statement on it from you at long last. It’s only taken a couple of years. So, to be 100% clear on this from you, you have no problem whatsoever with those that legally avoid paying income tax when they don’t have to? Don’t see what your numerous threads in the past about ‘tax dodgers’ have been about. If they were evaders, you would be posting up links of those convicted. Perhaps you’ll give it a rest now about those that are wealthier than you paying only the tax they have to.

In English please blup.
Restore have been studiously impartial in their comments over the Ukrane war. Calling it a tragedy which should be settled by negotiation. Which is basically supporting Pootin. As the aggressor he should be sent back to Russsian boundaries. But re store won't say this.

Re store like Trumpf want Pootin to win his war.

I'm no fan of Putin, but it's pretty much nailed on he will win the war.
America have rightly or wrongly pulled the plug on Zelensky, Europe have neither the tech, the money or the appetite to carry on without the help of the US.

Looking on the bright side, Europe will return to using cheap Russian energy.

Trumpf wants Pootin to win, that much is clear. Which makes Europe much more susceptible to further aggression. We wont be buying his energy.

This & any other government have got to be totally useless to get us 3 trillion in debt. That 500mn will get wasted somewhere else.
