Telephone master - am I totally stupid?

Softus , we are all trying to help this person out...bla bla bla...
In order to be adept at "helping", the help needs to be focussed and effective. Simply wanting to help isn't sufficient.

I've taken the view, perhaps incorrectly (and time will tell), but based on having worked in the telecomms side of the IT industry, that the OP is wasting both his time and ours. If I made suggestions of things that he could try, but in my heart believed that it would be fruitless, then I would be a charlatan.

The best advice that I can offer, with any shred of integrity, is as follows:

PAY BT THE SODDING MONEY AND LET THEM DO THEIR JOB.

I phoned BT who....when pressed a little said no, they could reconnect the line without charge.

Have you rung them yet?

got a text from BT at 6 o'clock this morning saying 'serice was now provided' . . . might explain a few things! though when I tried the line still no dial tone . . .

when I bought the flat the line was still connected in the previous owners name. I contacted BT who told me there were in fact 2 lines to the property, and there are two drop wires entering the flat.

You haven't just connected to the wrong incoming pair have you? Have you tried putting your master across both incoming lines?

I have worked for BT, I think the answer to the question. Am I totally stupid is sadly YES!

But you haven't invited them in to terminate the dropwire?

this is a standard automated text that is sent to hundreds of customers who have applied to have a line switched with probably 95% have no problems, but the text should also say if your line is not working ring 0800 number,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,give it a call

Who did the renovations?

Whoever it was has caused you a whole load of problems and that person should pay BT the £120 they reasonably require to come out and repair unauthorised work on their equipment.

I'm guessing it was you.

I think I understand the situation: the system was working fine but in someone else's name. You contacted BT to get the line into your name and queried what their position would be if you had no master socket. BT replied that you should have a master socket and they will charge the account holder £120 to come out and replace it if it has been removed or damaged. You declined their offer to come out and replace the socket and ask them to transfer the line into your name, which they have done. So, from their perspective you are up and running and you have a functioning line. From your perspective you simply want to replace the missing socket as cheaply as you can and get on with life.

Have I got it right?

If so, it shouldn't be difficult to connect the correct wires as described by others here.
