I have a stud wall, which is being boarded and plastered. I can't tell whether the mounting plate goes on the plasterboard or whether it should be cut into it like the electrical socket boxes for dry wall. Any ideas?

It's a plastic back box
You use the box in a stud wall like a dry lining box.it has fixing lugs
Or on a brick wall you may need to chop in and screw to wall
Make sure you get the back box the right way up

If it is going on stud wall put wire in first and you can cut box in after plastering.
It depends on the wall / surface you are fitting on.
Ai I said if a brick/block wall you may need to chop box back into wall and fix before boarding and plastering due depth of plaster// boarding off wall.

Cut the box out first ....as I found out the other day and clean out after plastering , before you paint or your paint may flake around the back box edge
