as my earlier post states i,ve had this terible noise for a few months that was driving me crackers as i couldn't solve it............

well! today i have put some new brake pads to the front of my car and guess what // i;ve drove it 3 times since fitting them and unbelievably the noise seems to have disappeared  !!! Now why do you think this has happened surley these little brake pads would not of made all that loud noise even though they were worn COULD THEY??

A pad put on the wrong way round. Don't laugh, I've done it, makes a terrible racket.

well, thanks for the reply..........i never noticed wheather the brake pads i took of were on the wrong way i've onlyhad the car since october so i don't know how long they had been on the car however they were really low! , however i know that i'veput these new ones on right so hopefully the noise will stay away i still find it unbelivable that such a loud rattle\banging noise could be caused by this, amazing learn something everyday

cheers mark

Hope you are right, best hang on a while ... jacking the car to change pads --just may have altered the alignment of some potentially rattly piece of suspension -- hopefully not !!

Fitted all the retaining clips and shims ??? Hope the pads are the right ones and move smoothly in their housing !!

just to add my tuppence worth (i know its an old post)
ford changed the spec of escort front pads at around r plate (big changeover period). earlier pads have no anti-rattle spring, later ones do. older pads will fit newer calipers but they usually rattle. most aftermarket suppliers would probably supply the older ones as they are considerably cheaper to buy in.
