The Maldives who are closest seem to support the UK position.

What is going on with this deal?
UK Bought Chagos in 1965 for £3M
and we now appear to be paying £18Bn. to give it back?
Meanwhile the former Mauritian PM who negotiated the deal is being investigated for money laundering.

It appears to be "rent in advance" for our military base.
We are being robbed quite literally.I would tell em
To go and do one
Trump probably will ??

It's another money laundering op as far as I can tell. Now I've read about it, I think it's not too bad. Call some of it 60 years back rent for illegally occupying the island and displacing the population. That's my first thought anyway.

Sounds like a terrible deal. What is wrong with here are the islands you sold us, btw we are keeping this bit? You can buy it off us if you want? Like we did to in the 60s.
900Nm from India 1200 Nm from Mauritius

I imagine there was very unequal bargaining power when the islands were originally "sold"
Anyway, the US leases the base from us. Surely we will get the money back from them each year.
Yeah, trump has got his cheque book out ready.
