The Chagos Archipelago…….

What is going on with this deal?
UK Bought Chagos in 1965 for £3M
and we now appear to be paying £18Bn. to give it back?
Meanwhile the former Mauritian PM who negotiated the deal is being investigated for money laundering.

I haven't followed it, but I am guessing some sort of reparations for forcibly displacing the population.

We are being robbed quite literally.

Now I've read about it, I think it's not too bad. Call some of it 60 years back rent for illegally occupying the island and displacing the population. That's my first thought anyway.

Sounds like a terrible deal. What is wrong with here are the islands you sold us, btw we are keeping this bit? You can buy it off us if you want? Like we did to in the 60s.
900Nm from India 1200 Nm from Mauritius

I imagine there was very unequal bargaining power when the islands were originally "sold"

Anyway, the US leases the base from us. Surely we will get the money back from them each year.

Yeah, trump has got his cheque book out ready.

there was a good series on Netflix on the one in Afghanistan. Something like $50m to build and $300m to dismantle. Fairly sure nobody was paying rent to a landlord.

Should tell them to Foxtrot Oskar, we bought them fair and square, we are now letting every Tom Dick and Abdul push us around
