Surely this methane could be capped, tapped and made use off.
If its lucifers fuel thats being released then it will only make conditions better for the poor souls in hell and help those of us still above the soil to keep warm in winter.

If there is any truth in reports that the sea floor is rising and rupturing, then it is doing so from 10 kilometres down. The pressure involved in raising the seabed would be unimaginable. That sort of pressure cannot be restrained and like a burst water-main - it will surely erupt. If it does, and massive amounts of methane are released then imagine what will happen. Methane is natural gas - the stuff you burn in your boiler and the stuff that blows up houses. If trillions of cubic metres are released then the first lightening bolt will ignite the biggest air/fuel bomb in the history of the Earth. All the available oxygen would be sucked out of the air in one giant global fireball. Life would end for human kind. Of that there is no doubt. If those reports are true - then BP has just drilled into the depths of hell.

There is more than one leak and that is what they are worried about.

There is a huge methane deposit under the GoM and if it comes out then the linked report above is the worst case scenario.

They don't know what will happen when they back up the pipe with a cap. All that pressure has to go somewhere and there is a very real danger than the sea floor could crack and collapse.

God I could talk for hours about this. Been keeping a close eye on it for ages now.

Hoggy with respect... you reckon a small hyperdermic needle sized prick in some rock is literally Earth shattering news, compared to the power of two massive tectonic plates wreaking havoc? which has regularly happened for millions of years?

Yes and if you think about it this movement of the tectonic plates will be releasing all the pressure over millions of years where as the BP oil leak is probably no where near any natural fractures!
So a big pressure bomb waiting to go off!

Yes but the areas where tectonic plates grate isn't a natural repository for oil and methane. A small jab bursts a balloon.

When you think about it, the oil-well leaking wasn't the start of the story.

The oil well blew up due to methane being present - the methane was already escaping before the rig blew up. The rig probably shifted due to the bulge in the sea floor. It's all becoming clear now. Drilling into unstable rock has released the genie.
