The kid's finally pulled the bannister off the wall

To be fair it's been loose for a while and i remember doing the same thing myself. Problem is the house is old and the bricks are crumbly. Now have a whole the size of half a tennis ball where the bannister attached. I could fill it with polyfilla and move where the bannister attaches but then it wouldn't match the bannister on the other side. Was wondering what the best filler would be, strong enough to hold the bannister while the kid dangles off it. Would cement mortar do the trick?

I've no idea what the 'correct' way to do this is, but I had to do the same in the last house. I just filled it with whatever I had lying around (I think it was polyfilla exterior) I left it a couple of days then drilled much longer holes and used a metal fixing with long screws. It never moved after that
