I have a 30's house (9" solid walls), the third bedroom has 2 north facing walls. I intend to knock off the old plaster and fit 50mm thermal board using dot n dab and mechanical fixings, but do I buy polystyrene backed/ PIR foam backed etc. I know they have different thermal transmission values.............but do these theoretical values actually make any difference in the real world?

It would be wise to think about a vapour barrier and celotex insulated plaster board comes with a vapour barrier.

I've similar to you, after research and procrastinating,
Am installing PL4000 Celotex boards on the external walls.

Not sure if it has the vapour barrier
It is pricey (Sheffield Ins were the best for me), but hopefully worth it.

Also remember to fill any holes/gaps, insulate floors and ceilings.
I have bought a Thermometer gun as well for £20 to check on temps ( gadget fun I think ).
