I though a little cold and looked at thermostat and flame device flashing on and off. First thought batteries. Found some rechargeable AAA batteries but failed to work showed low battery sign. This is common as NiCad is 1.3v not 1.5 so replaced with originals. No low battery sign and could here relay clicking. Still no central heating shops closed so used gas fire. Morning I bought new batteries fitted A1.

Seems thermostat fails before low battery indicator comes on and you can still hear relay even though it has failed.

In future I will change batteries every year as matter of course.
