My boiler seems to be heating the water to a really high temp even when the setting is turned down to 1. If I turn it up the boiler fires up as if the thermostat is working properly. Could it be anything other than the thermostat that coursing the problem :?:

Mine used to do that before I had it replaced. It also used to make a load banging and hissing noise. It had been working for 30 years.

It turned out that the feed pipe from the tank was almost totally blocked with scale. This was discovered when the the boiler was removed, and only a small dribble came out!

It was all cleaned out, including the feed tank, before the new boiler was fitted.

I notice that the old Thorn boiler is on the list of dangerous boilers, luckily I had a CO monitor near it.

Thank you, mine also makes noises exactley as you explained. I think its time to bite the bullet and get a new boiler. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best to get ?

Well I had a Vaillant EcoTec Plus 415 fitted and its very good indeed, and matches our heating requirements. Its also a lot smaller.

It was fitted in the same place as the old Thorn, but with new flue which is much smaller, and only a small amount of cool vapour comes out of it, compared with the very hot exhaust from the old one.
There must of been a lot of heat wasted!

A Fernox TF1 filter has also been installed, to remove any remaining particles of muck. It seemed a wise option.

Very little pipework had to be altered, most of it around the new boiler, as the return flow was is a different place.

All the work done by a fully qualified Gas Safe engineer who was recommended.

I have know doubt that you will get other recommendations on this forum, but Valliant do seem to have a good record of reliability.
