I'm building a garage in the garden and am toying with the idea of matching the house with a rendered finish and a brick surround for the door. Ideally using reclaimed imperial bricks and I'd like to bricks to be 30mm or so proud so the render is close to flush. That'll mean no bricks really lines up with the blocks. How would I tie the two elements together? Carefully chop a few blocks to key it, some metal ties, a wall starter kit, something else?

I've got a metal lintel that'll let me do the soldiers across the top just scratching my head over the uprights

This sort of effect, but without the lower bricks, just the surround:

You can't bond the brickwork if you want it to project from the adjacent wall to be flush with render. You'll need steel ties every 225mm. Not wall starters.
