I’m going to start tiling the kitchen tomorrow, around 4m2, a few power sockets, one light socket, no big deal really apart from one annoying problem. The height of the worktop to window cill is around 5 inches. If I was using a 6 inch tile it wouldn’t be a problem. I have gone for 4 inch. To make a better (bigger) cut I intend to raise the height of the cill by adding a layer of half inch plasterboard (what is best for sticking plasterboard to plasterboard by the way?) So I will have around a half tile as the bottom row. The problem is if I don’t follow this all round the other two worktops (U Shape kitchen) on the windowless walls the layout isgoing to look sh*te, but to my mind it’s not going to look very good anyway with a half tile at the bottom.

Not sure what the answer (if any) is to this – however the tiles are set out there is bound to be a compromise somewhere. I’m using whitish tiles with some random blacks to break it up. I have scoured the area for a suitable 6 inch tile with no success. The trend these days seems to be 4 inch for anything other than the ordinary. What’s more galling is that next door (identical house) they have a 6 inch tile under the cill and haven’t even had to cut it!

Sticking plaster board to plaster board, use plaster.

Have you though about rather than raising the sill, why not cut the tiles so you have a 3" & 2" cut to make your 5", whilst you cut lots of tiles they arnt ever a lot wasted.

You can stick the tiles to the wall with masking tape to get an idea of cuts etc.

This is what I did so I wasnt left with little cuts in corners/power points etc.
Although with an electric tile saw its easy cutting strips, but they dont look nice.

Easiest solution would be some kind of upstand along the back of the worktop to lift the tiling.

Another way round it might be to lay the tiles diagonally?

Or, if you have no other use for plaster, grab adhesive or tile adhesive is perfect.

Don't take this personally, but this is sheer lunacy.

Just tile the wall as it comes - if that means a 1" tile at the bottom of the cill then so be it. If you try and hide it, it'll just look that way.
