Hi all,

I currently have a plastic bath panel in place, which looks crud! As the rest of the bath surround is tiled i want to replace the plastic panel with a nice tiled one (much like the style shown in the link to the pic below).

However i dont know where to start really.

Was going to build a frame from batoning, and line with either ply or water resistant MDF and the just tile over the top - i'd like some ideas as i dont want to get it wrong or have damp problems later down the line!

Cheers

Baton and ply is the usual method.

Cheers Joe,

would i need any waterproofing or is tiling on top of the ply good enough?

Forget MDF & I would not advise using ply as a tile base for a bath panel either. The minimum requirement would be WBP & you need to seal the back & edges thoroughly; if it gets wet or even damp (& bath panels are inclined to), the ply will warp & there go your tiles. Use a waterproof tile backer board, it remains dimensionally stable when wet & fix tiles with a quality trade flexible waterproof adhesive & grout not cheapo DIY stuff.

Ignore Authenticstone’s post, he’s just posting an advertising link.

thanks Richard, very helpful.

...another thought - do i need to create an inspection hatch within the panel, so you could get access to the plumbing - or is it not nesecary?

Access is a good idea or you’re going to be pretty well stuffed in the event of a problem. You can do this by making the whole bath panel removable (but it will be very heavy) or if going for a built in look, a removable access panel; if you size it to match the tile grout lines it blends in reasonably well.

Or you could just knock a hole in the ceiling below in the event of a problem  .
