Tiles on 22mm chipboard flooring

Can I put floor tiles onto 22mm chipboard flooring?

I presume i would have to put down some sort of hardwood over the top of it 1st?

Im thinking of the hallway, is this doable?

A pro tiler told me that chipboard was not a good tiling medium...... I assumed this was due to the absorbency of the material and therefore the adhesive was likely to crack.

So i would need to put down a covering? what could I put down as a good medium?

The guy that advised me recommended ply......for sure, the tiles are still there and no cracking anywhere.
This was in a hall, so not a huge area, or at least not a wide one.
Obviously I can't comment on the suitability of chipboard, I just followed his advice. It was 9mm ply that I used, and the floor below that was good and flat.

was it floor boards? concrete? your good n flat floor?

The floor was 18mm chipboard, onto 4"x2" bearers, and the chipboard was brand new, screwed down.

Knauf Aquapanel Floor Tile Underlay 1200x900x6mm would give a suitable base for tiling over your chipboard and not raise the floor level much.

thx Burnerman, I would definatly be thinking about putting down a covering, I was just wondering what, my chipboard is band new too screwed down, foxhole seems to have the answer.. so there is stuff out there for this job I must do some more research

Knauf aqua panel or hardie backer boards laid with adhesive and screwed down.

Do not tile directly onto he chipboard as it can flex a little and your tiles may pop. Also if you have a leak of a water gets through the tiles over time the chipboard will absorb the water and expand.
