I've just removed some stone cladding from around my fireplace and it's left a terrible surface. I want a mixture of tile and wallpaper to replace it and was going to cover the area with plasterboard for a smooth surface. Is tiling on plasterboard ok in a dry area like this? I know it can be dodgy in bathrooms. If not, any suggestions what I can use? Thanks in advance.

Presumably the fire isn't to be used anymore?
Plasterboard is ok in this situation, but a cement board (Wickes aquapanel etc) is tougher and therefore easier to work.....less cracking and corners falling off etc.
It may be a little thicker than plasterboard though - it depends how much room you have to play with.
The surface can be plaster or cement render skimmed, if you like.
