Am I right in thinking I MUST lay something onto of the chipboard before tiling my large kitchen floor?

6mm Tileboard is going to cost a bomb so thinking about WBP Playwood.

Can I use 6mm ply or do I have to go thicker?

yes you need to overboard\replace it.

you'll need to go a lot thicker with WPB. 12mm at least. usually no more ply or similar works out cheaper and is thinner. what are you being quoted for backerboard?

You'll also need to use a flexible adhesive and grout.

if it's a chipboard floor, pull it up and burn it.

Lay your new floor with WBP ply.
