We are very new to home improvements and one thing we want to tackle is modernising our marble effect (horrid) fire place. Is it possible to place tiles over the top of the marble effect? If so what kind of tiles and adhesive would be best?

Have a look here. They are very helpful via email and the tiles are designed for the purpose.

We too are looking to update our change our fire and surround. We have an Art Dec surround but need to replace the hearth and tiles. I asked my uncle (architect builder) what the best way to do it was and he suggested using light concrete blocks and a lintel to reduce the opening to fit the insert. He did suggest an adhesive but I cannot remember off the top of my head. He did inform me that it is illegal to have flush hearths and that they must be 2.5 inches high.
