Hi when tiling around a shower tray is it best to put the first row of tiles straight on to the shower tray? Or put a spacer between the first row of tiles and the tray?

It's not generally recommended that you start from the bottom and work up, you might end up going out of plumb.

Start with a level batten all the way round half a tile up ( or whatever works out best for cuts top and bottom) start from here, remove batten when dry and cut lower tile to fit, leaving a 1-2mm gap at the bottom.
