Why don't you buy them ready cut from a builders merchant?
Ask for diminishing strips as some have never heard of furrings.

Use a chalk line to make from corner to corner and feed into the saw with no guide. It helps if the timber is straight
However, you should not do these down to nothing at one end, but have the thin end 10mm thick
