When i touch the socket in my garage it sends a tingling sensation to my finger any ideas

Turn off the electric to the garage ASAP.

You should not get a 'tingle' off anything. Ever.

There is clearly something not right so turn off the electric to the garage ASAP, and DO NOT touch the socket.

Is it a metal socket by any chance?

*Makes note to report college meggers as defective to the technicians dept. in January*

Hi Brist,
Although not a qualified electrician I suggest that you turn the circuit that feeds the socket off asap, then when you have made certain by means of testing that it is safe, take the front plate off of the socket and check that all the connections are correctly terminated. Is there a small earth fly-lead from the box to the outlet ??? (just curious, although it does need one !).
Have you any other metal, (chrome etc ) outlets on the same circuit ???

If it all looks good and is nice and tight it is probrobly best to get a qualified sparks around to do a quick test on the circuit , his charges will put your mind, and maybe not you, to rest !

Think its because the garage wall is really damp

No it isn't.

You have possibly got an earthing fault if it is an outbuilding.

You may have a live fault, e.g. if something has been clumsily wired.

the dampness of the wall may be the means by which the electricity is getting to the metal, but either way, the socket should be earthed and thus pull this electricity down to 0v -so you shouldnt feel anything! -turn it off and get it sorted.

(p.s. shocks outside are far more likely to kill so if it gets any worse... you get the picture)

There is no earth going from the socket to the socket box , do i need to buy a new socket and box with an earth terminal and earth the socket to the socket box.
