the siphon in our cistern appears not to be working the water goes up but lacks the oomph to flush so I bought myself a new one. The instructions say i need to turn the water supply off - obvious perhaps but when I went to turn the mains off the valve doesn't have any thing to enable me to turn it to the off position - I guess I could use pliers but would rather not - does anyone have any suggestions or know where i could get a handle?

Do you mean it has a squared shaft that looks about a quarter of an inch?

Does it have a screwhole in the middle of the shaft to retain the handle part?

Unless you have a spare or old tap lying about the easiest way is to buy a new tap and swap the head.

should cost a couple of pounds and may be useful as a spare in case the valve is/gets worn out.

assuming it is a stopvalve, you want one with a "T" shaped handle (there are wheel shaped handles but these are used on a different type of tap).

A word of warning - sometimes the handles are taken off to prevent anyone turning the tap off or on - is it in a public area, or open to children or vandals?

You can get a pressed steel "spanner" with a square opening in it which may fit exactly - they are sold as Brake Adjuster Spanners in motorists shops; but measure the shaft as accurately as you can, as you want a precise fit. Pliers will damage the soft brass shaft immediately, a mole wrench will take longer.
