Tightened the wing nuts to the max... but my toilet is still leaking... its a close coupeled toilet with a flush button.... it seems to be coming from where the donut is situated.... there is no valve to stop the toilet filling up... whats best way so i can take off the cistern

assuming it's mains fed...

1) turn water off at mains

2) open downstairs cold tap

3) flush toilet

4) check the the float / fill valve has no water flowing through it

5) undo feed to valve

6) remove wingnuts and any screws holding cistern to wall

7) take off cistern and replace donut

8.) reconnect

for bonus points install an isolation valve on the cold feed whilst the water is off.

if your gravity fed then bung up the distribution pipe in the tank or if you dare - turn the gate valve off

you should use a rubber bung (you can buy these in any DIY shed / plumbers merchants).

Real men just stuff a carrot into the tank

Have seen a few that were leeking because there is a bit of a gap between the rear of the cistern and the wall. When the 2 screws that secure top of cistern to wall were tightened, this pulls cistern slightly out of line, and opens up a gap at the doughnut seal.

First work out what is leaking.

If it only leaks when it is flushed it is likely to be the doughnut.

If it leaks constantly, it is likely to be the syphon to cistern joint, or the bolts securing the cistern to the pan if they pass through the base of the cistern.
