Toilet seat incorrectly fitted?

We moved into a new house a couple of years ago and had to gut quite a lot of the rooms, including 2 WC's.

We put ideal standard tempo toilets in both and had a plumber fit them. Both have had an ongoing issue with the toilet seat coming loose every few weeks.

I've just been tightening them up and forgetting about them but I've finally decided to get down on my hands and knees and take a closer look (what a way to spend a Friday night) and it looks to me like there is a washer missing that should help secure things once the nut is tightened.

What do we reckon, has my plumber bodged it or is it just a crap design?

Poor design ,thin bits of metal directly against porcelain is never gonna be great. The washer is on the top side under the hinge base.

I have just replaced the slippy-slidy bottom-fix bog seat in my non-resident partner's place with a £30 Croydex one which not only offers bottom or top fix (I chose the latter) but also has adhesive pads under the hinges with a clever way of keeping them held off the pan until you are sure the seat is in the right place. Then press firmly down and tighten securing screws. Good so far.

Double nutting might help. They look stainless to me, better to get matching nuts to keep it from rusting

For many years, we had the standard fitting of the round, adjustable hinge on top with the threaded bolt and plastic/ rubber washers underneath and that worked pretty well. I bought a new seat from B and Q a few months ago, and they now supply them with a bolt through a metal washer on top, and the bolt screws into a large rawl plug that fits underneath the pan. A rubbish set up that knocks the seat out of kilter whenever someone sits down with any force, as we often do.

Correct. We've got what you'd class as an old fashioned toilet seat on a toilet under the stairs and it's as solid as a rock. These 2 with the modern fittings - crap!

These rawlplug type fixings have been introduced to deal with the toilet bowls that fit flush against the wall and thus render the underside of the fixing inaccessible. They can normally be improved in stability by putting some clear silicone sealer or double side tape on the part of the fixing that contacts the top of the toilet bowl, before screwing the fitting tight

Thanks for that. The troublesome lateral movement is something to do with reaching over for the toilet paper, or so I'm told.

I thought it was because I had a fat arse, so that's good to know.
