Hi all,

How do I take off a currently installed chrome rad and replace with black ?

I will obviously also be replacing the TRV valve.

It’s 1200x500.. if I buy another will the brackets be able to replace the current bracket positions, as 2 are in tiles.

If it’s the same manufacturer, the brackets may line up. As for the trv replacement, you may need to partially drain the system, all depends on which type you have.

If you can buy exactly the same radiator but in black then, yes, the brackets and water connections will line up.
Otherwise you'll need to do some very careful measurement of whatever non-identical radiator you plan to buy, and it's unlikely that everything will line up perfectly.
I don't think it's possible for any of us to advise further - it's down to you to measure up and plan accordingly.

How do I isolate the one radiator to do these works, as I will need to remove the thermostat.

I was looking at draining the whole system, but I don’t have a train off tap on any downstairs rads.

You don’t need to drain the whole system just turn off the isolation valves on the towel rad draindown any pressure with the bleed valve.
Close off the bleed valve undo the two connections and lift off sticking thumbs underneath and empty into the bath or shower. You can then attach a hose to one of the rad valves and drain off into a bucket once you get no more water out, you can remove the valves as well.This is assuming you have a combi boiler .
You could avoid a drain down by attaching new rad to existing and mask off and spray valves black to match rad.
