I know this might sound daft but do trains operate as usual on a bank holiday?

why, should they be more efficient on bank holidays?

in general its a saturday service with some minor alterations in some areas its a sunday service with additions

look at this site national rail enquiries if you go to plan your jouney type in the details and it tells you what trains are running somtimes you need to check nearer the times[a week or so before]

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

if you just put "rail" or "trains" in google this site is at the head of the page

thanks, but according to the GNER and Southern Trains online timetables it appears to be normal weekday service.

i used to be a train driver on the central division [at redhill]then it was renamed connex then called southern

and it was always a sunday service with additional station open but that was 10 years ago

In my experience (South Western Trains) it is a Sunday service on Bank Holiday Mondays. I have never tried taking a train on the "special" bank holidays (i.e. those few where it isn't held on the nearest Monday, Christmas, Good Friday etc.) I think you would be hard-pressed to find a train running on Christmas day, for instance.

Of course that is my experience as a passenger, I think big-all kinda holds the top trump there with his "I used to be a train driver"

aaahh but there lies the problem adam w i lost my job on the lead up to privitisation
and your experiences are probably more relivant[more recent]although i do use trains two or three times a year surrey to edinburgh or irvine

as you and i know a commuters lot is not a happy one

Surrey to Edinburgh? We got free tickets from Shepperton to Edinburgh that time when Railtrack gave a day of completely free travel to make up for general c**pness many years back. Didn't use them, got as far as London and decided that was far enough

Thanks everyone for your replys, but it seems Southern and GNER are running a normal weekday service minus the odd train so this time I shouldn`t get stranded at Kings Cross!

its only xmass eve when trains wind down exceptionaly early[arriving at destination by 2200]then xmas day and boxing day no trains or very limmited services
