More holidays

Details of the Eid/Diwali e-petition have been passed to the Backbench Business Committee, which will consider its suitability for debate.
It was drawn up by Jon Timmis who said: “I believe that, given the number of Muslims and Hindus in this country it is only fair we allow them to have the most important days in their faiths recognised in law.”

So this was suggested by an archetypical white middle class do-gooder, and not an ethnic minority. Indeed, an Indian chap has very sensibly pointed out that if we keep adding more and more national holidays we'll arrive at a point where no work ends up being done!

Of course it is perfectly feasible that, at some time in the future, such non-Christian holidays will replace our existing ones. At least that would be a workable alternative!

Aren't ALL 'bank holidays' an anachronism where it is (mostly) only banks and offices - and schools when Mum and Dad may be working - actually have a day off.

Wouldn't another two weeks holiday be a more acceptable alternative?

What I found interesting, looking at that list, is that whilst England has 8 bank holidays, Scotland has 9 and Northern Ireland has 10! Fair?

What's more, Scotland has St Andrew's Day, Northern Ireland has St Patrick's Day, but no sign of St George's Day!

And France has 13.
There are four more on a Sunday (Observance days), and Xmas Eve and New Years Eve are classed only as Observance.

Because some, sometimes fall on a Tuesday or a Thursday, the French tend to take the associated Monday or Friday off also as Le Pont.

Interestingly, Nov 11th (Armastice) and May 8th (WW11) are BHs (and of course July 14th Bastille Day)
