Details of the Eid/Diwali e-petition have been passed to the Backbench Business Committee, which will consider its suitability for debate.
It was drawn up by Jon Timmis who said: “I believe that, given the number of Muslims and Hindus in this country it is only fair we allow them to have the most important days in their faiths recognised in law.”
So this was suggested by an archetypical white middle class do-gooder, and not an ethnic minority. Indeed, an Indian chap has very sensibly pointed out that if we keep adding more and more national holidays we'll arrive at a point where no work ends up being done!
Of course it is perfectly feasible that, at some time in the future, such non-Christian holidays will replace our existing ones. At least that would be a workable alternative!
