Travertine Wall Tiles Trim Edge or Cut Tile on Tile

Hi,
Me AGAIN..... I am having travertine tiles fitted and I have decided to not have window or edge trims.... NOW do I have the horizontal tile overlapping the vertical tile (so looking at it face on your see thin edge) or vice versa (you see edge only when looking down)
I also want to have something a little different, am having a recessed shelf/ cubby hole in wall.... anything else people have done that looked nice greatly appreciated.
