hi there I need to replace some wooden barge boards that are on a balcony. I want to use planed softwood and wondered what I have to do before priming them. Hardwood too expensive.

They will eventually be finished with gloss.

Should I treat them first then prime then two coats of gloss ?

Not aware that you’d ever do that if it’s to be painted, all I’ve ever done is used a quality exterior primer, undercoat, top coat. Eg dulux weathershield.

Just ensure to prime and undercoat, and finish with at least two coats of quality paint. Pay close attention to end grain at joints and avoid end grain at ends but have mitred corners.
