I've been digging the foundations for a replacement front garden wall, and found a largish root which was possibly the cause of the previous wall becoming unstable.

The nearest/only likely tree is an old lime in the street, but the root has gone a long way (8m) right under the length of the previous wall.

If I cut the root what would be best to put on the end of it to prevent future growth?

Cheers

It will regrow from further along the root, you wont stop it unless you kill the tree.

Thanks.

As it runs all the way along the trench, would it be worth reinforcing the foundations to minimise the risk of the root growing upwards again?
