Hey everyone,

Just wondered if anyone could tell me how to work out the self weight of a truss?? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Measure the dimensions of the timbers and add up the lengths of each dimension and convert to a volume. For example:

11metres of 90x38 principle timber will be 11.0 x 0.090 x 0.038 = 0.03762m³
3.5metres of 70x38 for struts and ties will be 3.5 x 0.070 x 0.038 = 0.00931m³

Total volume = 0.00931 + 0.0376 = 0.04691m³

Then multiply x timber density of approx 400 kgs

0.04691 x 400 = 18.76kgs

This would be quite a small truss you obviously need to take your own dimensions.

Thanks for that much appreciated!!!

Just gotta find out how to size the members now lol.

Are you designing your own truss or checking an existing?

Im designing a scissor truss as part of a university project - ive been having a look at BS8103 Part 3 for sizing the members but it only seems to cover common rafters.

Anyone got any pointers?
