MY vented CH system comprises a Potterton Prima 50 boiler, CP53 pump and all rad's fitted with a TRV except for a bathroom radiator which is fitted with 2 lockshield valves ( I believe this to be a by pass arrangement ). All the TRV'S are on the left hand side of all the rad's except for one downstairs radiator. This was fitted at my request to the house builder so I could control the temperature.

1. Could the system have been designed to require another rad as a by pass so the TRV should not have been fitted ?

2. Could the TRV create a problem as it not in the correct line of flow ?

I have always experienced air problems with this system.

the trv could well be bi-directional...so either side of rad is ok...best fitted to side where temp will be room average (ie not a corner, or surrounded by curtains)

1 rad as a bypass if fine...no others req.

The TRV is a ten year old MYSON . It does have an arrow on the front presumably indicating flow.

if it only has 1 arrow then poss one direction. is it fitted on the flow ?

from cold system see which pipe heats up first

Will do the test when the system starts up next. The arrow points horizontally into the radiator. So I presume the heated water should enter the radiator from the TRV. If it is on the wrong side could this be a problem - ie could this be a reason for air getting in ?

not in my experience.

air is either hydrogen from corrosion or dragged in by mispostioned pump

only if it srarts chattering ;)

I always put TRV on the right hand side (bi-directional) unless its awkward to get to.
