hi there can a tumble dryer trip a 32amp breaker ? Tenant called saying electrics tripped. I went round there and it's isolated down to a 32amp breaker that powers the kitchen sockets and cooker etc. Turned all sockets and it continues to trip. They said it tripped when they had tumble dryer on. Can te tumble dryer damage the socket it was plugged into causing the rcd to keep tripping even when its unplugged ?

Any ideas ?

What is this "32A breaker" which is tripping - an MCB or an RCBO (the latter with a 'Test' button)?

Are you saying that the device trips when the tumble dryer (and everything else) is unplugged - if so, do these trips just happen spontaneously, or when something is done (if so, what?!)?

Kind Regards, John

If the rcd is tripping will all the appliances unplugged you may have a wiring fault. If the TD socket is getting hot or there is evidence of scorching around socket it could be a loose connection which is arching when under load.

You need an electrician to test the wiring and ensure its safe, if you are the landlord.

Yes it has a test button. The tumble dryer is now disconnected but it still trips. The tenants are convinced it was when the tumble dryer was on. I have got an electrician to come and have a look tomorrow now to test it. Just wondered if anyone had known this to happen on a tumble dryer before. Can the tumble dryer mess the socket up afterwards ? Thanks

Your electrician will be able to determine what is going on. It's obviously impossible to tell 'at a distance', but it's quite possible that the tumble dryer has not got anything to do with it. There is quite probably a fault with the wiring or a socket. Are you aware of any 'water spills' recently - water getting into a socket (or other electrical accessory) is a common cause of tripping such as you are experiencing.

Yes.
OK you say the drier has been disconnected, does that mean unplugged or just switched off at the socket?
If still plugged in, unplug it. That may stop an RCD tripping.

Can the tumble dryer mess the socket up afterwards ?
It could if there was dodgy contacts between plug and socket or at the socket.
