The tumble dryer is tripping the 30a mcb in the CU when it's switched on. My initial though was thought that there might be a problem with the element in the dryer.

I was just wondering how it is tripping the 30a mcb but the 13a fuse in the plug is still intact?

Does this mean that it is not the element in the dryer but a problem in the fixed installation?

a 13A BS1362 will not always discriminate with a 30A breaker during short circuit and earth fault conditions as you have discovered.

Your tumble dryier is kaput, buy yourself a new one for christmas ;)

Was the tumble dryer the only appliance on at the time on that circuit.Does the dryer trip the mcb straight away or is it after a while.Just checking the obvious so you don't spend un-necessarily.

A long shot...but could it be overcurrent, triggered by the operation of the dryer?

Or it might be that the same circuit also has an oven, a dishwasher, a kettle, and three electric heaters on it.
