For the first time in 44 years the UK was a net exporter of electricity in 2022. UK demand fell by 18% and the nation's power consumption approaches [a level] last seen in the 1980s, according to analysis by researchers at the Uni of Brum.
By far the biggest exports went to France using an undersea power cable (to help 'em out after their nuclear plants required extensive maintenance).
Renewable power generation also reached record levels, with wind generation achieving a 24% increase on 2021. However, fossil fuel power stations also increased usage (without the problems sustained by the French), and but for shortages of gas and oil it could have been the first year Britain's combined wind, solar, and hydro would've generated more electricity than FF power stations - a milestone that'll certainly be reached by 2025 as more renewables come on stream.*
