I'm not sure I get that, if you are talking abou an IR test on a dead circuit - I wouldn't expect a fan motoir to work on DC, and most IR testers have a current limit of around 1mA, anyway.
The silly boy meggered the wiring to the light (switched off at the wall) but the power to the fan was still on, so the megger gave a trigger to switch it on...
