Hi i have a goodmans microwave oven model GSS20 the plate no longer turns round i have checked the plastic part that the plate sits on and it's fine what else can i check ? is this trouble a diy job or do i need to buy a new microwave ?.
Thankyou for any advice anyone has to give me.

Do you mean the drive dosent not turn even when plate is off.
Does the m/wave work if not on t/table.
Turntable is only to give even coverage of m/waves.

Hi thankyou for reply yes that is what i mean the drive for the plate does not turn but the microwave works is it still safe to use ? is there anything else i can do if i take it apart ?.

with the plate not turning you will get uneven heating/cooking so not really a good idea.

To check the motor and drive shaft
unplug
remove trays/plates
turn the microwave on its back
underneath there should be a metal plate either screwed on or pressed out of the base sheet steel
unscrew or cut the little bits of metal holding the plate in place
the motor is under this plate
remove the motor and check the spindle/drive shaft for wear or damage (rarely is it the motor U/S)
check motor
replace all parts, if you cut the links turn the bottom plate a little and several screw holes should now line up (have to provide your own screws)

note all this is at your own risk

O/k if its not the motor is there anything else i can do ? or do i just scrap it ?.
The only thing i dont understand is how it can pack up from not being used for 2 months i dont think the motor is seized as i can turn it with the plastic part that the plate sits on.

It will still work without the turntable. But you would do better to stir the food a few times, or turn the plate a few times, during cooking, to get more even heat. For a lot of things it doesn't matter much - liquids will mix themselves and you can give things a minute to equalise after cooking.

Once upon a time microwaves didn't have turntables

there are still alot of microwaves that dont have turntables they use stirrers hidden away instead.

As I said though it tends to be the drive coupling/shaft/etc that has gone as opposed to the motor

Thats because they had a stirrer blade at the end of the magnatron, (out of site) this then deflected the m/waves inside the cavity.

Hi i would just like to say thankyou for all the replies everything is now working fine after i replaced the motor. :D

Also to add my thanks, had exactly the same problem, and yes we can use the m/w with no auto turning but makes life a little bit easier if it does. Just to add that B&Q do a replacement motor for £18 (inc. p&p).
Nice one,
Dai
