I can answer that with one simple question.

Why was Trump elected?

Because the majority of the electorate saw him as an antidote to two terms of Obama, which for the American people actually delivered very little, if anything.
In four years people have turned against Trump (I think) for 3 reasons.
1. He's a nutter.
2. His handling of Coronavirus.
3. He's a nutter.

I'm not convinced that the antidote to Trump is to revert to the very thing that caused the people to vote for Trump in the first place.

I feel sorry for the American people, as I said in an earlier post, it really was a choice between a poop pie and a s**t sandwich.

Sadly, think you are right when really it is the legacy of the Blair/Brown government. It is their years in government where the individual ' country's' had their parliaments and government buildings created.
As is the UK leaving the EU - had they applied the restrictions to migration to the 'New' 8 member states of the EU that they were allowed to the UK would not have seen such a massive number of immigrants from eastern Europe which in many ways annoyed so many people.
