Two way problem

I've recently replaced some old tired switches with some nice brushed aluminium ones. All is well other than on the two way landing light. The switch at the top of the stairs is two gang, for the landing light and for an outside security light (which has no bulb in it and, as it's set 30 ft up, is unlikely to!). Having rewired the new switch the same (I believe) as the original (which worked), the landing light now only works when switched on at both top and bottom switches. Two cables come into the upstairs switch - however I'm unsure which of these come from the downstairs switch. I've drawn the mess I see before me in a word document which I have uploaded to my (v poor) website. If the link fails, a copy and paste of the address below should do the trick.

http://www.geocities.com/saslufc/LightSwitch.doc (just revised a misspelt)

Any help interpreting/solving my problem would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

Probably safe to say that you haven't..

You need to find out...

Without knowing which cores go where it's hard to say how it should be - you need to identify the cables, and look in the For Reference section to see how 2-way switches are wired, but one thing I can say is that one of your gangs will be having no effect, as you have linked L1 & L2...
