PLEASE use the light you are now basking in to do a bit of learning, and come to actually understand how things work before fiddling with them.

Trying to do electrical work on the basis of blindly following instructions to put-this-wire-in-that-hole without truly understanding why is very foolish.

Sorry BAS, I bow to your greater knowledge in this area. This is the first two way I've ever replaced, it's also my first house; so I don't have the wealth of experience in the area that some do - hence why I came onto the forum for help!

As it happens, thanks to the replies I do now have a better understanding of lighting circuits and will be able to take that knowledge forwards to other projects - which of course I will be sure to fully understand before I start work. I might even consider a qualification

Dont be offended,but Bas has a point though, what you have and appear to have struggled with is the most basic way of wiring a 2 gang switch, which anyone should be conversant with before even attempting replacement, the information is no secret and easily obtainable and in my veiw something to be researched before fiddling and removing all the wires, not after when things fail to work.
