I've got a gas safe guy coming around tomorrow, but I'm worried that the hose I've got is the wrong size for the connection on the wall.

Are they universal, or are they different sizes?

There's a pic of the gas tap behind the cooker here:

Is he coming to fit a new cooker?

You have probably bought a standard hose but you have a micropoint cooker connection....a more unusual connection.

Either get a right angled micropoint hose or get suitable bayonet connector for your new hose....the hose MUST hang in a downward direction to prevent strain on the hose.
