Underfloor Heating

I have just been quoted £1000 to put underfloor heating in an area no bigger than 12m squared. This seems a little over the top to me but thought i would ask on here.

The area is wooden floorboards and already has ply wood down to level it with vinyl tiles on top... can i just lift the tiles off leaving the plywood behind and then put the heating mat down and tile on top with a flexible adhesive?

If the job is as straight forward as i have written above then all i would need is someone to do the electrics... i can manage the rest and it won't cost as much.

Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks.

I do not know what the effect of the heat mat would be on the old adhesive. May smell a bit if it gets warm.
