I've seen those rubber bung style connections perish in a short time,
Which product?
I’ve been working with them for decades and have seen zero ill effects. I have NEVER seen them perish, even ancient ones that are in the sun all day.

You could've just put a shoe on the pipe above the gully, or cut out the grille and sat the pipe in that.

I've got a pair of them, hardly used, just sitting in the dark garage, 5 years old and have turned crispy and cracked. They'll be some online cheapo brand, whatever I found at the time. Useless, and if they'd been left anywhere mid-long term they'd have lost their grip and slid down the line somewhere.

Fernco (neoprene). Mint. Never seen them turn crispy or crack, even those that are decades old.
